We are giving SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio a closer look with the forthcoming 1.2 version providing some new critical functionality that is bringing it closer to feature-parity of BEx Web Application Designer (and Xcelsius Dashboards in some ways, too).

We currently have SAP BW 7.3 and SBOP 4.0 in use which gives us options as to where is the best place to deploy a DS App.  We've installed the DS 1.1 addon and the .SCA to SBOP 4.0 and NW Java stack, respectively, with plans to benchmark some performances between the two platforms.

Some initial considerations I'm aware of is that if we chose to make some of these DS Apps mobile, that SBOP 4.0 deployment would be the natural required target, however it would seem that maybe there are some advantages of deploying solely to NW stack?

With 1.2 beginning to support UNX (we run BW and Universes for non-BW sources), I'm guessing this may push us close to SBOP deployment than NW as well, but wanted to hear from others if there's been better stability or performance or functionality considerations/experiences depending on targeted platform!

I have a question related to how a design studio application saves data.  Does it or can it work like Web Intelligence where the data is saved within the application when it is refreshed?

Reason I am asking as I would like schedule the application for users and then they can navigate around the application with the relevant data within it. They wouldnt need to refresh. Just to check is it now possible to schedule design studio applications in 1.5?

I'm using the new (with DS 1.5 improved) "Generic Analysis Template" without a Datasource

(i.e. the user can select the DS when he starts the report)

It works fine if I start it with my Admin-User, but I get the following error if I start it with a normal reporting user:

Can anybody help? Does the user need some special rights?

This was an EMEA webcast I attended this morning.  Please note, the title of the webcast was roadmap, but the roadmap wasn’t covered until the last few minutes.  I will highlight some new things I learned.

Of course SAP’s legal disclaimer applies that things in the future are subject to change.

The SAP speaker said that in 1.6, designer mode will include a CSV file will allow you develop offline, not connected to an online data source.

Personas

This was one of the first times I remember SAP referencing personas in relation to Design Studio.

Data Analyst is a key business user, awareness of data, Excel/Access skills, and SQL knowledge

They understand the types of data, visualizations that organization needs

The information consumer is a decision maker, awareness of data, knowledge of analytics

They are the end users for dashboard

Application designer has simple scripting knowledge, data modeling, knows XCelsius / Web Application Designer, and web design.  The application designer is between business & IT departments

The administrator is one who ensures environment is up and running, authorization governance is in place

Lumira is more for the end user

Design Studio is for enterprise dashboards and is scalable and robust

The speaker said mobile for NetWeaver is only for the portal and only has iOS support

I have come across a new component called Selection Table when we right click on the Layout->Create Child. But couldn't find this on Components pane. Anyone have any idea about this component ??

I would like to know more regarding this.

Information regarding this Selection table is not available in Application User Guide for DS1.5. So it would be useful if I get responses.

I've made a dashboard with a couple of graphs including tooltips on mouseover. It is working fine when viewed on a computer, but I cannot get the tooltips to show on my iPad.

Is it impossible to show tooltips in graphs when viewing the dashboard on iPad?

This is a request from the customer, so I would really appreciate any input you have on this matter.

Hi,

I am currently trying to create a loop for a block of Javascript i have written to set a number of elements in a KPI Tile.

The code dilters my dataset to a single value based on a dimension of "KPI_No". All the values i need are also stored as dimensions in this single row.

I populate an array with the single value and then loop through each (the only one) elements in the array to pass in to a string. I then use this string value to set the text of variious elements (E.g the title, the valye. the prefix).

I currently have a page set up to hold up to 20 KPIs, but this page is complete dynamic and is populated depending of the KPI ref agaisnt the KPI_NO (1 - 20) in a seperate table.

I current have a number of line of javascript to set the first KPI elements, then reuse the code and change the object names from say "KPI_Title_01" to "KPI_Title_02".

I would love to be able to pass the "02" part of the object via a global variable or as some kind of loop, but i have a feeling that this may be difficult given the nature of the object naming and the fact we cant create standard loops in SAP javascript.

All ideas welcomed.

I am unable to access the data source based on a UNX universe on MS Access 2007 in DS 1.5 SP0 when I execute the application from BI Launchpad, no issues when executed in the local client. There is no issue with a SQL universe in local or Launchpad.

Cannot load InfoProvider "DSL/<Universe CUID>" (data provider "DS_1": Exception occurred during creation)

I have tried a solution to adjust the configuration of APS hosting the Analysis Application Service to add the command line for Connection server, it did not fix the issue.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Hi all,

I am having an issue if i want to save and recall a chart with interaction chart picker type. If I use other selections on chart picker type and save and recall fragment bookmark it works totally good. Otherwise i see a template display which is not a graph based on the KPIs it should be.

I am having version 1.5 sp6

Is that a bug or I do not know exactly why?

we are facing a strange mistake I hope somebody else has already seen and solved.

We are using a universe as datasource and everything works fine in local execution mode. But if we try "Execute on BI Platform", we get an error "no data available". Error log says:

Cannot load InfoProvider "DSL/ ...... " (data provider "DS_1": No service implementation available)

But what's really strange is: It only shows this error if I filter the data in a special way. We have separated our data in quarters, and only for one company in one quarter it does not work. The query retrieves perfect results in Web Intelligence and on SQL Server, but in Design Studio it lacks.

Is anyone familiar with that or similar issues?

Dear Experts,

after a long time, I wanted bring my old DesignStudio 1.2 Plugins to the 1.4. version. Therefore I installed on my fresh maschine Design Studio 1.4 64Bit, Eclipse Luna 64Bit, stored the 1.4. SDK in an Eclipse Subfolder and did all prerequisites like in the "Developer Guide: Design Studio SDK"-PDF Document Version: 1.2. - 2013-11-12  (I did not found a newer version).

After everything looked fine as before with my old DS 1.2. I started with a fresh com.sap.sample.coloredbox as my only plugin in my Eclipse Workspace. When I call Run as > Eclipse Application DesignStudio is started and I can drag and drop the coloredbox in the design area successfully.

But when I try something more complex, like adding a datasource to my just added chart or crosstab, Design Studio crashes with this errors displayed in Eclipse:

When I start DesignStudio normaly everything works fine and I can assign a datasource to a chart or crosstab.
I already tried to delete the workspace in DesignStudio (C:\Users\[myUser]\Analysis-workspace) and tried to increase the PermGen space via

--launcher.XXMaxPermSize

2048m

in eclipse.ini and

-Xmx1200m

-Xms512m

-XX:PermSize=128m

-XX:MaxPermSize=512m

in SapDesignStudio.ini but with no success.
I searched the whole SDN for the displayed error messages but also found nothing.

Had anybody the same issues or have some tips anyhow?

Following the blog Design Studio SDK: New Features in UI5 Table, today the Conditional Format function.

The baseline.

This is an extension of the UI5 Table component, as here -Design Studio SDK: UI5 Table Component.

The idea.

The community flatten functions provided by Mike (and a bit extended by me) are capable to flatten the result set into the table row/cols specification. This allows easy access on cell level to the data - and to the members. It means, the evaluation is made on CONTENT basis, not on logical dimension / member / measure basis. But this is enough for some start.

The rules need to be given as an JSON Array:

the rules can be checked in 3 ways:

* Match First (then ignore others)

* Match Last (last always win)

* Collect (check all and place the assigned "simpleFormats" into an array

The "simpleFormat" is a string which is passed into special attribute on the table

data-condformat="<the dimple format string>"

and it allows you to select this content via "normal" css selector. Some selectors are already build in, but you can freely add your own.

Example for CSS class

you just need to replace "green1" with your own string passed as simpleFormat

Conditional Options

Then, we have following evaluation options:

contains

checks if the content contains given strings.

positive check

negative check (exclude)

pattern

check the content for existence of some characters. you can use '?' to accept any character. Character '*' stops the check and returns the current state.

this should match all Be<here 2 characters which does not matter>in<and here any characters>

Like contains, but checks on exact content. also possible with exclude flag.

Checks for empty cells, can also be used with exclude flag, then non empty cells will be marked.

With 1.2 beginning to support UNX (we run BW and Universes for non-BW sources), I'm guessing this may push us close to SBOP deployment than NW as well, but wanted to hear from others if there's been better stability or performance or functionality considerations/experiences depending on targeted platform!

I have an issue on Design Studio but i don't know if it's due to my lack of skills or if it's possible to do this on Design Studio.

Here the problem :

First, users can select a year with a dropdown to filter datasource.

Then, I want to display on a same chart this keyfigure : growth quantities sales for selected Year, Year-1 and Year-2.

In BEx Query, i have no issue. I can select a year and i can see data for selected Year (N), N-1 and N-2

But on Design Studio, if i select 2015, i can see only data for this year. If i select N-1 or N-2, there is no display on chart.

So, i missed something or if i have a filter on year, Design Studio is not able to find data for N-1 and N-2 ?

I have come across a new component called Selection Table when we right click on the Layout->Create Child. But couldn't find this on Components pane. Anyone have any idea about this component ??

I would like to know more regarding this.

Information regarding this Selection table is not available in Application User Guide for DS1.5. So it would be useful if I get responses.
